September, 2021
It’s been a serious start to September. Heavy things are happening in our world. I would venture to guess that you have been affected by at least one of these challenges. So let’s consider this month’s newsletter as a community check in: How are you doing? What kindness can you extend to yourself today and what kind act can you extend to someone else today?
I planned to write about the importance of play within an artist’s practice. I planned to discuss how Play is actually something we could all use a little more of these days. But I want to hold some space for those who are showing up today but who also may not be in the mood.
This is a reminder to please take this newsletter and information at your own pace.
I define play as something you do for amusement, enjoyment, and for no practical purpose except to remind yourself of feeling good, really good good.
Play is not mutually exclusive to surviving (and I dare to say that many of us are in survival mode), in fact, I think it is necessary to our survival. There are all kinds of articles addressing the importance of play for adults. Want to read the research? Click here, or here, or here.
I like to also think about play as the catalyst to re-fuel the feeling of wonder, excitement, and awe- all feelings that lead to curiosity. Curiosity being a key component for creativity and engagement.
So what now? How do we artists go from this intense moment in time to something more neutral without losing our awareness, but allowing ourselves some reprieve from the drama of it all? Here are a few suggestions:
Do you have a favorite song? Put those headphones on and blast it.
Do you like old things? Find some thrift/antique stores and pick things up.
Is there a playground near your house? Find those swings and swing swing swing.
Do you like flowers? Buy the flowers, pick the flowers, and arrange them.
Are there sidewalks near your house? Dip a brush in water and paint the sidewalk.
Got crayons? Try scribbling.
Got a deck of cards? Try to make a card castle, if not, how about some solitaire?
Got Legos? Channel that inner 8 yr old and build your heart out.
Got dirt/mud? Just do it.
Do it just for you.
For no reason.
I suppose this list can go on and on, so how about it? What are you going to do for play today? This week? This month?
Personally, I’m going to blast some Dua Lipa. She’s my secret dance weapon and I’m going to dance my heart out.
Now, on to the Links!
Kind wishes,
Wylie
September Studio Playlist brings a little of something for everyone.
HOT TIP
Seeing art is a MUST DO. There is nothing quite like getting out and seeing art in person. Digital images don’t do surfaces and textures justice and the experience of seeing art in person can’t be captured on an IG post. This month’s hot tip is to get out and see some work in person. Let’s do this safely. If you can, make an appointment beforehand with that gallery you’ve been meaning to check out, or that museum who has the amazing exhibit worth seeing in person. Don’t forget to mask up. Remember the longer you look at work, the more it can reveal to you. Challenge yourself to look at a piece for at least 2 minutes. 120seconds. Walk around it if you can, look at the way it is composed, the way it is supported, mounted, displayed. Surprise yourself with what you observe and see how you can translate those observations in your own practice.

The Larger Conversation- Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Virtual Talk- In each of Titian’s poesie, the fates of the female subjects are often at the hands of men, as relevant today as they were in Renaissance Spain and Italy. This raises questions around the male gaze, gender, power, and sexuality. Given today’s environment, women are challenging and changing the ways they are characterized, recorded and presented in the arts and for audiences-at-large. Consider what the art of today and in the future will look like when the gaze shifts to the actual lived experiences of the female subjects who are portrayed.
September 30, 2021, 6:00 PM, EST. $15. Register Here.
Sharah Hughes- In-gallery artist talk with Shara Hughes. Contemporary American painter Shara Hughes was born in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout her career, Hughes has participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues such as MASS MoCA and the High Museum of Art. In 2017, she was included in the Whitney Biennial, and in May 2018, she completed Carving Out Fresh Options, a large-scale mural in Boston commissioned by the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in partnership with the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. Wylie helped to ground me and she asked me questions to help zero in on what I am trying to do. Talking to Wylie was so comfortable and comforting! She was affirming, supportive, and helpful with suggesting writing exercises. With her guidance I am working towards discovering and critically thinking about the facets of my work. I look forward to more meetings with her!
