OCTOBER 2022
Community.
We do not live in isolation. We live as part of a network of beings who make choices conscious and unconscious that determine how we interact within the world around us.
Living as an artist is closely tied with the network of people we surround ourselves with. Being an artist is not just about making art, that is just one small percentage of the practice. Being an artist is also about how we show up for ourselves and for others within our community.
As an artist within a community what is our responsibility (beyond making what we make) to the greater context/audience/whole?
I get that Art is a solo thing, but I also believe that it thrives when it is also seen as an act of service. And by this I don’t mean by showing your art. What I mean is showing up to other artist’s shows, offering mentorship to artists just getting started, lighting each other up on social media, and writing about each other's work.
How are you going to show up this month in community with your fellow artists?
Happy October! I hope you have a great month!
Kind wishes,
Wylie
HOT TIP: You get out what you put in when part of a cohort (whether this is an mfa program, residency program, shared studio space.) The strength of the group depends on your participation and willingness to get to know others, their interests, etc. It also depends on your willingness to be vulnerable and share about your own experiences, interests, work etc.
